The most renowned hotel companies in Paris have begun 2011 with the aim of fighting, rethink strategies and trying to protect the arrival of the ambitious Asian competitors, the chain Shangri-La

, Mandarin Oriental and Peninsula. Three companies are making heavy investments in recent months to gain a foothold in the French capital, one of the major tourist destinations in the world. Last December, Shangri-La launched its new facility, which boasts its views of the Eiffel Tower , while the Mandarin Oriental to open in Paris next summer and the signature of Hong Kong, Peninsula, will open a five-star hotel near the Champs Elysees, expected in 2013.
Along with these, reopened last October the Royal Monceau hotel, now managed by Singapore’s Raffles group.
“Of course we’re concerned,” said François Delahaye, director of the Hotel Plaza Athénée, Five Star, owned by the Sultan of Brunei. ”The arrival of Asian competitors makes us question our business because we do not want to lose market share,” he admits, since the supply of these new networks can be especially attractive to tourists from the Far East. Delahaye believe that Asian firms will introduce new services, which until now were not common in Parisian hotels, including spa service rooms. For example, the Hotel Plaza Athénée, has been forced to accelerate the renovation of its rooms as well as investing in staff training and ensure its continuity over the coming years. The same strategy followed by other upscale hotels like Bristol or the Four Seasons George V who are also renovating their facilities.
It’s not all negative opinions. Didier Le Calvez, who runs the Bristol hotel management after the traditional George V believes that competition is beneficial as it will attract tourists of Asian origin who had not previously traveled to the French capital. ”The new competition will help to put Paris on the map as a tourist destination,” he says. In the case of Bristol, one of the few names that even Parisians are managed by a family business, their conversion has resulted in three new suites of 250 square meters and twice the size of your spa.
